Ban Duea, a riverside community along the Mekong River in Mueang district, Nong Khai province, is named after the many fig trees, or Ma Duea trees, that grow along the riverbank. The community is home to a peaceful way of life along the Mekong, with strong cultural traditions and beliefs in sacred spirits that protect the river. Villagers often perform rituals to ask for blessings from these spirits before fishing, hoping for a good catch. The community also celebrates river-related traditions like the Lai Reua Fai (fireboat festival). Most villagers work as fishermen, raising Nile tilapia in cages or catching fish from the river. They also practice terraced farming along the riverbank, growing vegetables. Their harvests are processed into various products such as Nile tilapia sausage, sun-dried tilapia, and Jaew Bong chili paste, as well as fig soap and herbal creams. Ripe figs are used to make fig jelly mixed with coconut, served as a dessert for visitors. Additionally, fig tea is a refreshing local drink, perfect for quenching thirst.
